I’m trying to fit in some fanarts I’ve been wanting to draw in a quick dip between projects!!! So, this is Lady Jessica, from Frank Herbert’s Dune! PLEASE, please, no spoilers, I’m only part-way through the book! I know it’s an old book, but I’m getting super into it, and it feels like the kind of thing I could do without spoilers for ^^; Anyway! I really love Jessica! She’s super awesome and basically a ninja!!! This picture is quite simple, I guess… my own vision for Jessica… ^_^ I redesigned her dress many times. I wanted something elegant but simple, but kept on overworking it and adding uneccesary stuff… and then pared it back down a little in the end, so, I’m happier with this look! Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember what colour her eyes were (or if it was even mentioned), so, I just went for hazel ^^; She has quite a jaw going on, there. I’m really into ladies with larger jaws recently! #pleasemarrymerose #noreally

Here’s a new warm-up sketch I’ve been working on this week. I’m trying to work sketches I’m pleased with into poster designs or fuller pieces that I’d want to have on my wall (if it wasn’t my own work). I spend a while at the end of each day tinkering and experimenting with photoshop and the colours. I’m constantly trying to develop my process with colouring and I’m enjoying trying different styles. It has such a dramatic impact on the original art.

I watched The Man Who Fell To Earth last week for the first time. Followed by the Five Years documentary (which was great). The film has a lot of Roeg hallmarks: weird sex scenes, a contempt for hand-holding exposition, and beautiful imagery. So, y’know, it was disjointed but fascinating. Bowie is brilliantly alienated and so effortlessly iconic in every shot. It’s a flawed film but it stayed with me and left me desperate to draw something relating to it.

The only thing I knew going in was that Bowie was to be the only part of the image coloured white and that I’d use variations of the orange hair as the rest of the colours. I opted for a similar screenprinting registration error that I used in my Seventies sketch as I think it has a pleasing but disconcerting effect on the eyes.

A quick process note: The background and borders, like the textures I use on top, are all created out of elements I made myself (either screenprinting rolls of paint or using brush and ink on big scraps of paper). I’m also trying out some bespoke brushes in photoshop. I prefer the hands on approach though. I think using other people’s textures or sourcing things like this on the internet is a little disingenuous. If you’re going to spend all this time in front of the computer doing post-production on an image, you may as well get your hands dirty and have some painty/inky fun first.

Hi! I’m getting queries about pre-ordering convention sketches, so I can do them before-hand and take them along to the event for people to pick up. This is a *REALLY* good idea and I cannot emphasize this enough — at events, I am always tired and caffeined up to the teats, so, pre-ordering will *DEFINITELY* mean you’ll get a much nicer product, as I’ll be able to do them on my own terms at home. This isn’t to say I won’t be doing them on the day, but I’m just…. uh, giving a warning(?) XD

My con sketches are on 8.3 x 5.8 bristol board, pencil with a coloured ink wash. (Sorry, don’t have any examples to hand right now!) I charge £10 for these, so you can just chuck that over via Paypal if you like, and I’ll have the sketch for you in a sturdy envelope on the day.

I list all events I’ll be doing at the base of my website’s front page, but just for reference, this year, I’m at Melksham Comic Con and Thought Bubble. (I’m not doing any events next year — taking the time out to finish my book).

Today I received this beautiful copy of the sketchbook prop used in Bates Motel (https://www.facebook.com/BatesMotelAETV). I wasn’t expecting such a lovely thing, and I’m just over the moon to have been thought of. It’s signed by some of the cast and everything! It’s wonderful seeing up close the skill with which my art was transformed into this thing of awesome!

Oh my, I missed this!! That is so cool they sent it to you! What a treasure! :D I’m looking forward to seeing Bates Motel. I love Freddie Highmore and it’s off the chain you did this for it, too!!!! <3

Squeee, we can finally share this with the world! (well, I’ll post something later to share with the rest of the world who are still asleep, but for now….YOU GUYS, YES, YOU - CHECK THIS OUT! ^_^)

So, myself, Kate Brown and Paul Duffield have been doing a little work with the Tower of London. Yes, the Tower of London! If you’re half as much of a history nerd as we are, you’ll know how exciting that’s been for us. The scaffolding shown in the photo just went up this week. We chose a few key moments/characters from the Tower’s history for the project. Kate and I illustrated and coloured a few scenes each, while Paul pulled it all together and added design elements with the amazing arches. And the Tower have printed them up onto the scaffolding hoarding. Life sized, baby!

(and yes, all you Richard fans, that there is a life-sized Richard III - just for you <3)

The scaffolding will be up for a good few months. So if you’re planning a visit, enjoy! ^_^

Ahhh thanks for posting this, Emma!!! Was a bit worried my Jane would be too pale in that yellow but it don’t look too bad! It’s so nuts to see them at this size, oh my god! We gotta get pix of us gurning away in front of them! I wanna get a pic of me next to Little Richard, I love how you drew him so much, he looks like a beautiful little doll, argh, argh arghakljdaklsjdasd <3 Are you gonna put up your pics as separates? This was an amazing project to work on, and we all had a lot of fun researching the little history snippets and working together. I can now tell the difference between all the royal guards!!!!! 8D Thanks so much to Paul for his work on figuring out the printing side of things and Professor Layton-ing them all together like this with such pretty designs. I expect we’ll all be making numerous trips to the TOL in the next six months (UNADULTERATED SHRIEKS OF PURE JOY), so there’s sure to be more pics. As Emma says, if you wanna visit the Tower this summer you should totes get pics of yourselves next to our dudes and ladies and send them to us!!! x
